Supplemental support guide
Cabling, Pruning or Removal? Start With the Defect
A support system can reduce movement or add strength to selected branches and stems. It does not make every splitting tree safe or eliminate the need for inspection.
Decision guide
What a qualified assessment may recommend
Monitor
The union or limb does not currently justify intervention, but documented reinspection is appropriate.
Prune
Reduce load on an overextended limb or improve structure while retaining suitable canopy.
Support
Install a cable, brace or prop when the defect and surrounding wood are suitable for supplemental support.
Remove
Choose removal when risk cannot be reduced to an acceptable level or the tree is not a suitable support candidate.
| System | General purpose | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Dynamic cable | Flexible synthetic support that allows some natural movement. | Product selection, installation and inspection intervals are system-specific. |
| Static cable | Higher-stiffness support used to restrict movement between selected stems or limbs. | Hardware and attachment points must be matched to tree condition and load. |
| Brace rod | Rigid support through or near a weak or split union. | Installation wounds the tree and is not suitable for every defect. |
| Prop | Support from below for a selected low limb or stem. | Requires a stable bearing area and ongoing inspection. |
After installation
Support systems are managed assets, not one-time guarantees
ISA advises that support hardware offers limited added security, is not a guarantee against failure and must be inspected regularly. The arborist’s proposal should state the system, purpose, affected stems and inspection expectations.
Funding is case by case
The program may reimburse eligible approved costs up to $1,000 per tree. Most awards will be less, and the City does not publish separate caps for dynamic or static systems.
