Established-yard guide
Mature Yard Planning in Oakridge and Westmount
Established lots can contain large trees, additions, driveways and changing drainage patterns. The right maintenance plan begins with the tree’s actual condition.
Source-backed local context
Established housing is a defensible local theme
Planning material for the broader Westmount district documents established residential fabric and 1970s housing in parts of the area. Tree age, species and risk still require property-level evidence.
Property checklist
Start with the tree, not the neighbourhood stereotype
Measure
Estimate DBH at 1.4 m and document any fork, slope or trunk irregularity.
Locate
Confirm private, boulevard or boundary ownership and check for protected-area or heritage context.
Assess
Have a qualified arborist identify the actual condition and an appropriate maintenance objective.
Apply
Submit the current quote before work and wait for the City’s decision.
Mature-yard maintenance
Avoid age-based risk claims
Silver Maples, Norway Maples and other large trees can develop defects, but neighbourhood age does not prove that a particular tree has reached “peak structural risk.”
Use inspection findings—such as cracks, dead branches, cavities, root disturbance or overextended limbs—to define the work.
Possible TCCP fit
Eligible work and a qualified professional are still required. Funding is not automatic.
Check the by-law
Within the Urban Growth Boundary, the Distinctive Tree rules may apply. Tree Protection Areas use different rules.
