Oak-wilt timing guide

When Can TCCP Work Be Completed on an Oak Tree?

For the 2026 program, London defers work on oak trees to November through March. That program condition is distinct from a blanket municipal pruning prohibition.

April–October

Do not schedule routine TCCP oak work

London’s program defers oak work outside this period. CFIA also advises Canadians not to prune oaks between April and November.

November–March

Program work window

Approved TCCP work on oaks is scheduled during these months, subject to the Offer of Award and arborist availability.

Why timing matters

Fresh pruning wounds can attract beetles that spread oak wilt

Oak wilt is caused by Bretziella fagacearum. Red oaks are particularly susceptible, and the disease can spread through root grafts or beetles carrying fungal spores.

For suspected infection, sudden upper-crown browning or early leaf drop, contact the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and a qualified arborist rather than treating the tree as a normal pruning job.

Planning sequence

  1. 1
    Inspect and measure

Confirm species, approximate DBH and the problem being addressed.

  2. 2
    Obtain a qualified quote

Keep the assessment and quote within the City’s six-month guideline.

  3. 3
    Apply before work

Wait for the City’s decision and Offer of Award.

  4. 4
    Schedule within the window

Complete approved oak work between November and March.
