How to Measure DBH for a London Tree Permit

DBH stands for Diameter at Breast Height. In London, Ontario, this single measurement determines if your tree is a protected "Distinctive Tree" (50cm+) or if it qualifies for the $1,000 preservation grant (40cm+).

Step-by-Step Tutorial:

1

Find the 1.4 Meter Mark

Measure exactly 1.4 meters (roughly 4.5 feet) from the ground up the trunk. This is the industry-standard "breast height."

2

Wrap Your Measuring Tape

Use a flexible measuring tape to wrap around the trunk at that 1.4m mark. Keep the tape level. This gives you the Circumference.

3

The Math (Or Use Our Tool)

To find DBH, divide your circumference by 3.14 (Pi). For example, a 126cm circumference divided by 3.14 equals a 40cm DBH—the minimum for the grant.

What if my tree is on a slope?

If the tree is growing on a slope, measure the 1.4m height from the uphill side of the tree.
